Michigan Business Insurance: Discover how to create a disaster recovery plan for your company!
2/2/2012 12:45:26 PM
When it comes to disasters in Michigan, business insurance is not the only way to help avoid excess loss. It’s important that you have in place a disaster recovery plan so that people in your workplace know what to do and how to do it if catastrophe occurs.

When you fail to plan, your business may lose customers or become uncompetitive, employees might seek jobs elsewhere, and it can all end in chaos. Devising a disaster recovery plan helps to keep your business operating either during a disaster or again shortly afterwards. Guidelines for this include:
1. A risk assessment to identify hazards.
2. Appointment of a recovery plan coordinator and/or committee.
3. Development of the plan – this should cover the following areas:
• Procedures for immediate evacuation.
• Procedures for treatment of injuries and contact with emergency services.
• Property protection and security, and prevention of further losses.
• Alternative premises or accommodation.
• Communications with clients and other stakeholders.
• Data protection and/or recovery.
• Property repairs.
• Insurance claims.
• Equipment and machinery required to keep operating.
Naturally, this is just an overview and there will no doubt be very detailed procedures for each point, and possibly extra steps involved since each business is unique. Enacting your disaster recovery plan may mean that you do not have to close for too long, if at all, and may also help to minimize your need to make claims on your Michigan business insurance policy!
