Michigan Business Insurance: Learn About Tree Maintenance!

1/20/2012 2:26:16 PM
Having trees around us helps to enhance our environment, and for some of us, trees may even affect our mood and sense of well being. However, if trees are not properly cared for, they can become dangerous missiles during strong winds. This is especially true for older trees, which are inclined to have brittle branches that are prone to breaking. Even without high winds, some older trees may fall and damage nearby buildings, which for a Michigan business might result in injuries, business interruption, and Michigan business insurance claims and other costs.

Fortunately, regular tree maintenance can help prepare trees to cope with high winds and reduce the risk of damage. Tree maintenance tips include:
• Trees should be examined for decay, cavities, cracks, and damaged root systems which can indicate weakness or disease and in turn can increase their propensity to fall and cause damage.
• Some older or diseased trees might need to be removed altogether for safety reasons. It’s important that major tree maintenance and removal are handled by professional contractors only.
• All trees should be pruned annually, and new trees planted with their full-growth size in mind and not positioned too close to buildings.

Prevention is almost always better than cure, and while trees may be beautiful, safety needs to be a top priority. However, since there are no guarantees, it’s also important that for any Michigan business, insurance policies are regularly reviewed to ensure coverage is adequate to repair or rebuild if necessary!
